TE AU MOANA LUAU

Saturday night was beautiful for Anabelle and I. As you may have seen in earlier blog posts, we like to play tourists once in a while and just get away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives; even if it’s only for a few hours, we like to do as the tourists do. And that’s just what we did.

We spent the evening at the Te Au Moana Luau at the Wailea Marriott. Fortunately for us, we got to go for free as part of a promotional showing. From time to time certain activity companies invite certain hotel employees and Concierge staff to their show as part of a public relations campaign. This is one activity that I’m definitely sending people to.

Parking was a breeze which is uncommon for certain big hotels, this one included. Trekking through the property was really nice. Though we weren’t staying there, it gave us the feeling that we were.  As we approached to get checked in, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced an activity check in as seamless and easy as they made it. The line was short and swift. Before we could get a visual map of what was where, we were up, being checked in and seated.

We walked up to get our dinner tickets and before I gave my last name the girl at the desk knew exactly who I was (I didn’t know her). Talk about service. I grabbed a Diet Coke as Anabelle opted for a Pina Colada. After about 10 minutes the emcee introduced himself and announced the unearthing of the Kalua Pig (not pork).

MY NON ALCOHOLIC EVENING

Shortly thereafter, the dinner lines were opened and the feast began. Almost all the luaus have the same food, but this really seemed to be a cut above the rest. Some of the many options were rice, steak, chicken, fish, macaroni salad, salad, and bread and butter, etc. As we in the islands say to good food, it was ono.

GRUBINIZATION

The show started with the ceremonial lighting of the torches. A short hula followed. Once the dancers got into their groove, a light drizzle began. Ka few minutes in, the light drizzle became a heavy drizzle. The guests all used their dinner napkins as cover as the prompt staff handed out long cloths for everyone. All while people were ducking and dodging for cover, the dancers never skipped a beat and danced on. They were awesome.

After a 10 minute rainfall, the clouds opened up as the sun set in the west. It was a sight that you only see on postcards. The dancers danced dance after dance =) as we the audience sat in intrigue and amazement. The dances covered the broad spectrum of dances that’s a part of Polynesia. Every dance had its own individuality and personality. It was great.

TAKING COVER

Towards the ending of the show, the part that everyone loves to see most was coming up; the fire dance. It was just as you can imagine it. It’s fierce, fast, and amazing. When the spotlights go off and all you see is the streaking glow of the fire, it’s a sight onto itself; absolutely beautiful.

ANABELLE & HER FIRE DANCER

From start to finish, the show was one of a kind. I’ve been to many different luaus and this was one of the better ones. The waitstaff were kind and courteous, the dancers were “frickin badass”, the music was good, the food was good, everything was top notch, even the rain.

Thank you, Tihati Productions for an amazing spectacle and a wonderful night.
